Elianna Renner’s work is an ironical reminder of the special and frequently invoked bond
between mother and child, particularly between mothers and daughters.
While children imitate their mothers and try to be as much like them as possible,
adult women consciously distance themselves from their mothers. This stems from the
search for our own identity, which begins at puberty. All studies confirm that most daughters
do not wish to be like their mothers, no matter how loving their relationship is.
Science even has a name for the fear of being like your mother: matrophobia. This
perfectly normal fear can now be worn as an ironic statement on your t-shirt.
Interestingly enough, the meaning of the equivalent word patrophobia is not the
fear of becoming like your father, but the fear of your father or the ‘fatherland’, or the
exaggerated pathological fear of heredity, heritage and inheritability.
